As a follow-up to the Family and Community Historical Research Society (FACHRS) 10th Anniversary career servant mini project, your Committee has decided to launch another research venture, which it hopes will attract the participation of a large proportion of the membership. To that end the extent of involvement has been kept small.
The project aims to cast some light on the lives of railway station masters in nineteenth century Britain. For the purposes of the project we have identified individuals who were enumerated as railway station masters in the 1881 census. Where possible, these station masters have been identified by the counties in which members reside. In some cases, this has not been possible, and we have therefore allocated one in a neighbouring county or in a county not covered by our membership.
We shall use the Census Enumerators’ Books to locate these career railway station masters. Members who have the appropriate subscriptions or other means of access, such as via a local library or record office, can use the online indices of Ancestry.com , Find My Past or other similar websites to trace their progression from one census to another.
All FACHRS members will have received a letter that provides them with the name and attributes of a railway station master identified in the census enumerator’s book of 1881. The project exercise is to examine the census enumerators’ books for pre and post the 1881 census and attempt to trace the life cycle of the railway station master in question. Members may of course use any other means of census index investigation to which they have access.
Thank you Sue Smith
