The objectives of our Society is to promote both individual and collective historical research into aspects of
When the focus is on a local community, rather than the family, the outcome leads itself well to a FACHRS Research Project where individuals commit to a micro-study, within the context of a regional or national scope that is founded on a core theme.
For example one could examine how seasons could affect marriage in a community and then compare and contrast differing communities regionally or nationally. Another focus could be crime and the community, how a community maintained "law and order" and compare crime levels in differing communities. Perhaps a project could research the population within a community and how that community supported those less fortunate.
Themes for projects are selected by the Society following submissions from the members. Research projects are open to all members who wish to take part. The only stipulation being that the findings data is made available to the Society in the format requested with in the project. Each project is administered by a volunteer project coordinator and each project will have access to a professional academic who provides oversight of the academic direction.
Taking part in a Society Project usually involves working with primary sources in a County Record Office, though in some cases a project will focus upon the use of the Internet to gather data. Members also have an opportunity to present their findings at the Society's Annual Conference and they may submit their work for publication in the Society's Journal. At other times one of the objectives of the project will be to prepare and publish a "topic" book and researchers will have the opportunity to submit their work to the editor.
Society projects are
ideally suited to local historians and family historians.
Continued learning educational seminars are often provided as part of the
project to the researchers.
