About Swing Riots:During 1830-1832 country life
throughout England and Wales was disrupted by civil unrest
associated with illegal protest activities of agrarian workers,
who destroyed farm property and attacked farm owners and
persons forming the countryside Establishment. Convicted
offenders were dealt with severely, often by deportation or
execution. The civil unrest was popularly and collectively
referred to as Swing Riot, because warnings sent to farmers
were signed with the pseudonym 'Captain Swing'.
About the FACHRS research:Research undertaken by
the
Family & Community Historical Research Society
uncovered new evidence to show that the extent of the civil
unrest was far more widespread than previously thought.
Over 3,300 cases (double the previously identified cases)
have been identified by the research team that has enabled
the identity of the persons involved to be revealed.
