The 2009 Annual Conference.
Optional Sunday Activity
| Programme | Optional Sunday | Speakers |
For anyone who will be staying in London, Janet Cumner will be leading a walk around the Spitalfields area of East London.
There are some very good Georgian houses and Hawksmoor’s splendid Christ Church as well as the market. This was formerly one of London’s major fruit and vegetable markets and now, having been renovated and extended is a fashionable shopping and eating area. There is a lively market to look around on Sundays.
On the very edge of the City of London, Spitalfields has long been an area of immigrants. Huguenots moved into areas of housing constructed on the fields to the east of the City in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. In the later nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century east European Jews lived there and in the present day Bangladeshi immigrants hold sway
Walk will commence at 11.00 from Liverpool Street Station and last about two hours. There are plenty of eating places in the area for coffee and/or lunch.
Let Janet know at the Conference if you are interested.
