Frequently Asked Questions about the FACHRS mail list

Is this Mail List suitable for me? How do I subscribe?
How do I use a mail list? How do I unsubscribe?
Can I "post" personal family history questions? Can I ask for help in research?
Can I use the Mail List to send a message to the committee? Is it possible to reduce the number of e-mails being sent to me by FACHRS?
I have been offended or insulted in (by) a message, what should I do? I have tried to join the mail list but I still do not get any mails, what is wrong?
Is there a "correct" way to compose mails? I have tried to leave the mail list but I still get mails, what is wrong?

How do I send a message?

Is this Mail List suitable for me? That depends on what you expect from the mail list. Perhaps first it is better to explain what the FACHRS Mail List is not! This mail list is not the place to post searching genealogy questions, for example "I have an ancestor Tom Wright (b1856) married Elspeth Figgins (b1870) in Blackpool, Lancashire during 1890, any connections?" is a question that would not be "posted" on this list. Such a genealogy question would be better posted on the Rootsweb Mail List for Lancashire Family History (or similar). This mail list should be looked upon as a forum for researchers, regardless of professional or amateur status, who are pursuing Family & Community History topics within small scale "micro" research. Questions or discussions can include a broad range of topics such as household structure, personal & family life cycles, kinship relationships, migration, local associations & community networks, together with studies within a family, community or local context of social structure, paid and unpaid work, workplace communities, leisure, religion, politics and welfare. The initial focus of FACHRS is on the United Kingdom & Ireland within the 18th to 20th (inclusive) century, but these are not exclusive periods and topics prior to the 18th century that are of a similar vein may well be expected.

How do I use a Mail List? The following these simple instructions can avoid some fairly common
mistakes that most folks tend to make at some time.

The most common error that folks make is to use "Stationery" from within Outlook Express, or some other e-mail programme. Make sure that Outlook Express/Tools/Options/Compose/Stationery/Mail is not ticked.
These are the sub topic list of this section. If you wish to keep a copy you can download this section as a zipped text file (4kB).

A. QUICK INSTRUCTIONS
To subscribe to the list, send an e-mail message to:
UK-FACHRS-L-request@rootsweb.com (for individual messages)

You can also choose to receive a "digest" of all messages sent to UK-FACHRS instead of the single messages. This will only be useful if the Mailing List gets very busy and it proves more useful to get a digest every couple of days, instead of daily messages. To do that send an e-mail to
UK-FACHRS-D-request@rootsweb.com (for a digest of multiple messages)

In both cases the body of the message should contain only one word:
subscribe
Note: it is very important to Turn OFF your signature file when sending this command

To unsubscribe from either the individual list or the digest list, send an e-mail message to:
UK-FACHRS-L-request@rootsweb.com (for individual messages)
Or
UK-FACHRS-D-request@rootsweb.com (for a digest of multiple messages)
In the body include only one word:
unsubscribe
(Turn OFF your signature file when sending either of these commands)

If your mail programme insists on having a subject then repeat the subscribe or unsubscribe text in the subject.

When subscribing or unsubscribing do not use a signature, the server only will work with one single word in the body of the e-mail.

To post messages to everyone on the list send your email to:
UK-FACHRS-L@rootsweb.com
this time make sure you do sign your e-mail

B. PURPOSE
The UK-FACHRS-L Mailing List is an e-mail list for Family & Community Historical Research. The purpose is to encourage and support research in family history or community history and to provide a forum for researchers, regardless of professional or amateur status.
Subscribers are encouraged to post topics in connection with a broad range of topics that can include personal & family life cycles, kinship relationships, migration, local associations and community networks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
C. TWO VERSIONS TO CHOOSE FROM:
UK-FACHRS-L is for individual messages to be delivered to your e-mail address. As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, you will receive a copy of the message. To subscribe send an e-mail message to:
UK-FACHRS-L-request@rootsweb.com   with one word in the body of the message: subscribe
UK-FACHRS-D is for a digest of several accumulated messages to be delivered to your email address. As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, they are put into a digest to be delivered later. The digest is generated approximately once a day and delivered to digest subscribers.
This option is handy for people who don't want multiple messages to accumulate in their mailbox. To subscribe send an email message to:
UK-FACHRS-D-request@rootsweb.com   with one word in the body of the message: subscribe
Don't forget, if you subscribe to UK-FACHRS-D, remember to unsubscribe from UK-FACHRS-L (see instructions above)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

D. E-MAIL ADDRESS TO USE:

To send MESSAGES to ALL subscribers on either version of the list use:
UK-FACHRS-L@rootsweb.com

Unless you are unsubscribing or subscribing UK-FACHRS-L@rootsweb.com is the e-mail address to use.
When sending a standard message to the list, for instance when asking for or sharing information, it is OK to use a signature file attached to the e-mail message.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
E. - Message format and attachments.
Please submit messages only in plain text, and don't submit attachments.
Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments. Please, always use a
helpful subject line like "Stocksbridge women workers 19C", rather than a generic one like "enquiry about Stocksbridge".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

F. - Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy.
Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that they want is for policy to get in the way of our doing research.
Therefore, the UK-FACHRS list will accept brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to FACHRS.
Don't include prices and ordering info; just include a pointer to a URL, a commercial mailing list, or an e-mail address where the complete ordering information can be found. In case of doubt, send the message to the list custodian, don@the-dicksons.org, and I'll review it and forward it to the list if appropriate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
G. - Copyrights. Any person sending a message to this list retains the copyright to it. By sending the message, you grant to the list custodian, and to FACHRS, and assign forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large.
You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in total as a part of their replies sent back to the list.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

H. Archives. At present, the archival copies are stored at Rootsweb.com and can be retrieved by anyone. To get a list of the messages that have been archived, send a message to
UK-FACHRS-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject:

archive SEARCH Subject: latest/*

and nothing in the body of the message.

You'll get back a message that looks like this:

ARCHIVE search subject: latest/*
BEGIN---------------cut here------------------
latest/23:10:Subject: Re: Stocksbridge women 1840 (fwd)
latest/24:12:Subject: Looking for Dorset lacemakers
latest/25:15:Subject: Invitation to participate in brick makers research
latest/26:15:Subject: Lancashire Cotton mills
latest/27:17:Subject: Admin message
END-----------------cut here------------------

If you decide you want to read the message about Dorset lace makers, the "latest/24:" part of the line identifies the file containing the message.

Send another message to
UK-FACHRS-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject

archive SEND latest/24

and nothing in the body. You can request several messages at once, but please don't request more than ten at a time.
Do not send for the messages above, they are dummy examples and do not exist.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
J. - No-nos. Please do not submit virus alerts, chain letters, or other off-topic material to the list. Don't send copies of copyrighted material. Vulgarity and personal attacks on other list members are
also unwelcome. Unless you are spelling a name do not use CAPITAL LETTERS, in polite e-mail circles, people who use capital letters are SHOUTING and therefore being impolite. So for example JONES is OK and STOCKSBRIDGE is OK, typing something like CAN ANYONE HELP ME is definitely not OK.
Try not to send messages exceeding 8 kilobytes in length. Do not attach files to e-mails, no one will open them in case it is a virus. In fact a good rule of thumb is if you see a file attached to an e-mail from UK-FACHRS-L, delete it just to be safe!
If you see a file attachment from UK-FACHRS-D the as long as it is another Email it is OK (they are supposed to be there) ... never open a doc file, an exe file or a vbs file.
If someone else violates the rules, please do not send their message back to this list! That just magnifies the problem, and defeats the anti-spam defences at RootsWeb. The best form of defence is to ignore any vulgar or personally abusive message.
K - COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE: This is the "if all else fails" bit. If you feel moved to complain about an individual, please e-mail UK-FACHRS-admin@lists6.rootsweb.com   explaining the cause of your upset. The list administrator will contact the individual directly ex list. In the event of persistent poor behaviour the list administrator will remove a subscriber from the list.
L - Yahoo as an ISP: If you plan to use YAHOO as your Internet Service Provider you may need to be manually subscribed to the list, the same when you unsubscribe. Don't worry, I keep an eye open for alerts from the server, and will do the necessary!
M - Going on holiday, or a business trip?: If you plan to be away for any length of time - do not announce this to the list - To do so is to advertise your home is empty!
So unless you take your PC with you and can access e-mail, it is worth sending an unsubscribe message to prevent your mailbox filling up whilst you are away. You can always re-subscribe when you get back. If you forget to unsubscribe, and the space for emails allocated by your ISP fills up, we get to know about it because messages sent to you "bounce back". When this happens 4 times the server software automatically removes your name from the subscribers' list. If this happens to you and you become aware that you are no longer receiving emails from UK-FACHRS please e-mail me,
don@the-dicksons.org and I will check your subscription status.
N - New to all this?: Well the first thing to realise is that we were all new once ...!
The Internet Community has a word for newcomers, it is Newbie. Personally I hate the word, but as it is now internationally accepted I will adhere to the convention. Why is it important? Because there are many places where Newbies can turn to for help in understanding the strange language sometimes adopted by more experienced folks. For example SKS is often seen in a message, and this is email shorthand for Some Kind Soul, usually used when somebody is asking for a favour. Anyhow, I do not propose to fill up this message with more examples because this message is long enough already! So if you are a newcomer to the Internet Email, you can find more at http://users.ap.net/~lancelot/gen/newbies.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's about it ... except for one last thing. Whilst some of the FACHRS committee members participate in the Mail List, it is not advisable to use the "list" as a means of contacting them. Always send such e-mails direct. A list of FACHRS officers is maintained on the web.
Good Luck & Have Fun!
